Village of Naperville Fence Requirements
Looking for more information on the permitting requirements in Naperville? Deciphering the regulations around permits can be difficult, so here we try to break some of the basic regulations down for you to be easily digestible.
Their fees are as follows:
- Residential Home or Business: $88
- Clerical Fee: $18
- Permit Admin Fee: $26
- Inspection Fee: $44 (minimum 1 required)
- Additional inspection if needed: $44
First off, ensure you have a legible copy of your Plat of Survey for the property. You will need this in virtually every town and municipality. The village will need this as a point of reference for the fence being installed, and will need to be submitted to us with the permitting paperwork. If you don't have a copy of your Plat of Survey, no worry! You can request one via a Freedom of Information Act request, or FOIA, from the village.
Some basics to keep in mind (content courtesy of Naperville.IL. US):
- Fences located along a rear property line which abut a public right-of-way must include a gate providing access to the right-of-way for mowing and maintenance purposes. o Fences located at the intersection of two roadways (including alleys) must be designed so as not to create a sight-distance conflict for motorists.
- The finished side of all fences must face away from the lot on which it is installed.
- Fences that are erected in the proximity of any City electrical equipment must provide the required clearances as indicated on the attached sheets. o Fences serving as a barrier for an above or in-ground pool must meet the minimum barrier requirements provided in the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code; however, the proposed barrier must still comply with the zoning requirements provided above. o It is possible that your homeowner’s association covenants will have more stringent regulations regarding fences. We recommend that you contact them to ascertain if this is the case.
- A 3’ tall closed fence can be constructed on any property line.
- A 4’ tall open fence (see Figure 1 above) can be constructed on any property line.
- Fences facing Hobson Road cannot exceed 4.5’ in height and must be an open fence made of split rail, wood or wrought iron. o A 6’ tall fence can be constructed on the interior side property line, but cannot extend past the front of the home o Interior Lots: ▪ A 6’ tall fence can be constructed on the rear property line. o Corner Lots:
- A 6’ tall fence can be constructed on the rear property line, but must end at a distance of 10’ as measured from the corner property line to the nearest point of the fence. Note: if the rear property line abuts a major arterial roadway, the fence installed along this property line may be 9’ in height, subject to the same conditions noted above. You can search the City’s Website to determine which streets are classified as major arterials or contact an Engineering Technician at 305-5985.
- A 6’ tall fence can be constructed along the corner provided that the fence is placed at or behind the corner side yard setback and does not extend in front of the home
- The "ugly side" of the fence must face inward toward your property
- No fencing is allowed in front yards
- A completed fence application with 2 copies of your plat of survey will need to be submitted.
